‘‘The big 3? It’s just big me!”
The first round of football on the island has concluded, and excitement is in the air as one school aims to reclaim its championship title. Tafuna High School (THS), located in the village of Tafuna in Tualãuta County, Western District, American Samoa, has made a significant impact in the American Samoa High School Athletics Association (ASHAA) football season. Known as the Warrior Nation, Tafuna has been a force to be reckoned with under the leadership of Head Coach Oakland Salave’a.
This season, the Warriors have been dominating, scoring over 20 points in each game while allowing just 6 points. Offensive coordinator Taveuveu Kolose Ili has unleashed a dynamic offense featuring a motion-heavy trips formation, averaging over 100 yards in the air and 150 yards on the ground. Standout wide receiver Kanai Satele is crucial to this success, while the talented duo of Sanerivi Fuimaono and Marques Maluia at WR2 adds depth to the receiving corps. Running back Teariki Foa has been a nightmare for defenses, showcasing unmatched versatility and intelligence on the field.
Tafuna has faced off against the top schools in American Samoa and emerged victorious in all three matchups. In their opener against Leone High School, they scored an impressive 34 points while shutting out the Lions. The defense, led by coordinators Travis Stower Pavihi and Nof Sualevai, was relentless. In the second game against Samoana High School, the Warriors exploded for 50 points, with Foa rushing for 150 yards and quarterback Lolesio Afoa Jr. throwing for over 150 yards, leaving the Sharks with no answers. They capped off the first round with a dominant 47-0 victory over Fagaitua High School, showcasing their offensive strategy of passing to set up the run, leaving defenses scrambling to keep up. On defense, the Warriors’ front four has been disruptive, consistently pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Operating mainly in a 4-2-5 formation, they have proven to be a formidable barrier, making it difficult for offenses to execute their game plans. As we head into the second round of ASHAA football, the question remains: will any team rise to challenge the Warriors and claim victory? Only time will tell!
