The Biggest Threat to Democracy.

American Samoa, an island like no other. Your beauty shines and glows. It is well known throughout the Pacific. Your sunrises and blue skies satisfy the eyes and makes you want to come back for more. Your beautiful mountain range of greenery soars across the whole entire island, an island filled with alofa and talofa, where greetings and respect are given. A democratic government system that incorporates unique cultural elements into its governance framework. The most significant strength in our Samoan lives—our individual selves—also represents the most vulnerable aspect of our voting system.

Voting is not just a right, it is a pillar of democracy.

When we vote, we are not only selecting leaders, we are shaping policies, influencing community decisions, and ensuring that our island moves forward. It is a responsibility that carries the weight of our freedoms and the direction of our society. Many young people often underestimate the significance of their individual vote. Democracy was formed on the idea of a government where power is invested in the people, “by the people and for the people ''. It allows the citizens to participate in the decision-making process, either directly or through their elected representatives. It was made this way so the people can hold the government officials accountable, it is a way to ensure that the government serves the interests and values of the people. The youth of American Samoa often underestimate the importance of their vote, believing it has little impact. However, it is crucial to remember that every vote matters and can play a significant role in driving change.

The grounds of voting should not be based solely upon your relationship with the electorate. Family relationships do not obligate you to vote for a relative. It is essential to make your voting decisions based on qualifications and merit rather than personal connections. Give a fair chance to all the people who are running, hear them out on what they have to say. Consider their intentions and proposed plans if they are elected to office. Ultimately, the decisions they make—whether beneficial or detrimental—will impact future generations, including ourselves. It’s time for us to make a change not only for the betterment of our beautiful island but also our people. The people of American Samoa have suffered long enough from corruption. Something needs to change and it can start with how we vote and who we vote for!

Now with that in mind, I have a special question for you. What kind of voter are you going to be this year? Change is waiting to happen, but we are holding it back. Vote with an open mind, vote because you believe in what a candidate is saying. Vote for the change that you believe in, not only for the time being but also for the future. American Samoans, the ball is in your court, together we can make a change for the betterment and the future of our island.
